About Summer on the Cuyahoga

Who We Are

Who We Are

Summer on the Cuyahoga (SOTC) is all about exposing the best young talent to the abundance of professional opportunities in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, home to the Cuyahoga River. It’s a unique summer internship program open to students from our eight partner schools: Case Western Reserve, Colgate, Cornell, Denison, Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, Smith, and University of Chicago. The program brings together 50-70 students for an intensive summer immersion program designed to help interns explore the professional, civic & social offerings of the Cleveland area. SOTC offers students challenging internships, community introductions, alumni connections & group housing for the summer.

Our mission is to recruit talented college students for summer internships and a unique immersion into the community with the ultimate goal of having graduates build networks and permanently locate in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio (NEO).

90% of interns open to returning to NEO for future opportunities.

99% of interns would recommend NEO to their peers.

Over 1020 student participants have taken part in the program.

Over 160 students have returned to NEO since 2003.

Your Support Matters!

SOTC is generously supported by a small number of Northeast Ohio family, community and corporate foundations, but support from our alumni donors is imperative to sustaining a quality program. Further, our grants depend on the size of our donor population, not just the total amount given. Please consider a gift in support of our students so we may continue offering a unique programming experience.

“My friends tried to give me really high expectations for the SOTC program. However, it was still hard to believe how great it was until I actually did it. I was really impressed by how easy it is to make change in NEO. It’s a place where you can make a lot of useful connections and where you have a lot of resources available to make positive change.”

“The two interns we hired through SOTC were a godsend. They gladly handled every task/project with enthusiasm and impactful results, and they managed a wide demographic group of people. We reveled in their stories of the myriad SOTC activities, and we were proud to hear how much they grew to love Cleveland. And our permanent staff had more energy and enthusiasm during the nine weeks they were here!”

“We loved our interns. They were hard-working, eager to learn and great stewards of their schools. I would never be able to hire this caliber of interns on my own, and have been incredibly happy with the SOTC interns over the last two years.”

“When I think of Summer on the Cuyahoga, the first thing that comes to mind is relationships. Starting off my summer, earlier than others, I was able to create a bond with my alumni host; her hospitality and many connections with influential people (like the Senator) within the community set the tone for the summer. I was lucky enough to have an amazing roommate who explored Cleveland with me. The programs showed the diversity of Cleveland’s culture from sports to music and hip new neighborhoods to the old ones. The program attempts to not glorify Cleveland by showing not only the good things going on, but also talking about the issues that need attention. As the summer progressed, I began to fall in love with Cleveland along with falling in love with Mitchell’s Ice Cream.”
